Insurance and Specialty Contact Lenses

Patients and insurances often view contact lenses as a luxury.  However, often times your prescription or a corneal disease might require contact lenses for adequate vision and quality of life.  In such cases, Specialty Contact Lenses are considered “medically necessary” and often covered in some by medical and vision insurance providers.

All Vision and Medical Providers have a different definition of Medically Necessary Contact Lenses.

Some common conditions include:

1. Corneal Ectasias
   1. Keratoconus
   2. Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
2. Complications following cornea surgery
   1. Radial Keratotomy (RK)
   2. Penetrating Keratoplasty (PKP)
   3. LASIK
3. Very High or Asymmetrical Prescriptions
4. Past Corneal Trauma or Infection
5. Certain Corneal Diseases
6. Severe and Difficult to Treat Dry Eye
